Rossauer Barracks (Schlickplatz 6, Vienna) – built in the 1860s, this was one of three fortresses built in Vienna to protect the country’s elite (including royalty) from the masses in the event of a public uprising. The barracks are similar to some of the castles and palaces of northern Italy with contrasting red brick and pale stone trim. After the fall of Austria’s royalty in World War I, it was subsequently used as a homeless shelter, as a museum by 1927, and part of the Ministry of Interior until after World War II. Nowadays, it houses the Ministry of National Defense and Sport..
